OSCAR nominated actress Saoirse Ronan is to star in the film adaptation of On Chesil Beach.

Ian McEwan’s novel was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2007 and takes place in 1962, during a young couple’s honeymoon in Dorset.

During the course of an evening, both reflect upon their upbringing and the prospect of their futures.

The film will mark Ronan’s second McEwan adaptation before the age of 22, following Joe Wright’s Atonement, which won Ronan her first Oscar nomination.

The young actress is currently nominated for her role in 50s-set romance Brooklyn at the Academy Awards next week.

On Chesil Beach will be directed by Dominic Cooke, whose previous credits have mainly been in the theatre, where he was artistic director of the Royal Court.

A co-star has not yet been announced.

The film’s producer, Elizabeth Karlsen, of Number 9 Films, who were the driving force behind Carol and Youth, commented: “It’s an extremely exciting prospect to be reunited with Saoirse Ronan on such a beautiful and heart-breaking project.”
