Scarlett Johansson confirms Ghost in the Shell role

Marvel Avengers Assemble

Story by Jack Foley

SCARLETT Johansson will take on the lead role in a live action American remake of classic Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Avengers star will likely play a character based on the cyborg detective, Major Motoko Kusanagi, who played a key part in the 1995 film and the comic book series it is based on.

In the books, Kusanagi is team leader of a Japanese counter-terrorism organisation focused on cybercrime in a futuristic world.

Despite being a Japanese favourite, the action will most likely be transferred to the US, under the direction of Rupert Sanders (of Snow White & The Huntsman fame).

The original Ghost In The Shell went on to spawn three anime films (one made-for-TV), an animated Japanese TV series and three video games.

Johansson was reportedly offered $10m to star in the remake, underlining her newfound status as an A-list action star off the back of the success of The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Lucy.
