Screen Actors Guild Awards 2007 - DiCaprio bags two nominations

The Departed

Story by Jack Foley

LEONARDO DiCaprio has received two nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his roles in The Departed and Blood Diamond.

The 32-year-old secured a lead actor nod for his performance in Edward Zwick’s thriller Blood Diamond and in the supporting actor category for Martin Scorsese’s The Departed.

The nominations follow the nods he received from the Golden Globes, where he is pitted against himself in the lead actor category.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is seen by many as one of the main events in the run-up to next month’s Oscars, which makes DiCaprio a firm favourite to secure a nomination at the very least.

But he faces tough competition from other best actor nominees Forest Whittaker, for his role as Idi Amin in Last King of Scotland, Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness and Peter O’Toole for Venus.

In the actress categories, three Brits will be going head-to-head. Dame Helen Mirren has been nominated for her lead role in The Queen and Dame Judi Dench was nominated for Notes On A Scandal, a film which also brought Cate Blanchett recognition in the supporting role category.

Kate Winslet has also been nominated for Little Children. All three will face competition from Penelope Cruz, for Volver, and Meryl Streep, for The Devil Wears Prada.

Other films in the running for acting awards include Dreamgirls, Babel, Bobby and Little Miss Sunshine – all of which will compete with The Departed for an ensemble award.

Babel also secured best supporting actress nominations for Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi, while indie hit Little Miss Sunshine earned nods for supporting actor Alan Arkin and young supporting actress Abigail Breslin.

Dreamgirls secured supporting nominations for Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson.

And Blood Diamond secured a second nomination for Djimon Hounsou in the supporting actor category.

The Screen Actors Guild has 120,000 members drawn from the acting community in the US. The awards will be presented on January 28.
