Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer for Elsa & Fred remake
Story by Jack Foley
SHIRLEY MacLaine and Christopher Plummer will star alongside each other in a remake of Elsa & Fred.
The original Spanish-Argentine film, released in 2005, was set in Madrid and followed the unlikely relationship between an elderly couple.
In the remake, to be directed by Michael Radford (of Il Postino fame) MacLaine will play “a lively retiree” in New Orleans who gets a new neighbour when “straight-laced widower” Fred (Plummer) moves into her apartment building.
At first, Fred is unwanted but soon proves his worth.
The original film was written and directed by Marcos Carnevale and featured the actors China Zorrilla and Manuel Alexandre. It became a huge hit in Argentina.
Radford penned the screenplay for the remake with his Il Postino writing partner Anna Pavignano.
He commented: “I am thrilled to be working with two of the greatest screen actors in the history of cinema. My aim is to do justice to this great movie and bring it to the wider public it deserves.”
Shooting is due to take place in New Orleans and Rome, with principal photography set to commence in December.
