A FIFTH and sixth Spider-Man movie have moved into the development stage even though production has yet to begin on Spider-Man 4.

Variety reports that James Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the scripts for both films, which will have an inter-connecting storyline.

It is not known whether director Sam Raimi or stars Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst will return after the fourth film, as their contracts expired after Spider-Man 3 and they signed a one-off deal for a fourth film.

Ironically, Vanderbilt had written the original script for Spider-Man 4, which was subsequently re-written twice to be more in line with what Raimi had envisaged as his next step.

But Sony remain keen on seeing Vanderbilt’s vision realised and view it as a good opportunity to re-boot the franchise should its original players depart.

Spider-Man 4 begins shooting in early 2010 with a view to being released in cinemas in May 2011.
