Star Trek Into Darkness – Alice Eve interview

Star Trek Into Darkness

Interview by Rob Carnevale

FRANCHISE newcomer Alice Even talks about playing Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness and some of the challenges it involved. She also recalls how she reacted to getting the role. She was speaking at a UK press conference.

Q. What was the biggest challenge for you in making Star Trek Into Darkness?
Alice Eve: I suppose my biggest challenge was keeping up with JJ, whose mind moves at warp speed. It’s kind of an amazing experience to watch take place and be part of. But in practical terms, it turns out that I’m a terrible runner on film. So, I really had to work on that endlessly on the same day. JJ used a bit of it in the end! So, I really had to work on that.

Q. What was the first thing you did when found out you were doing Star Trek?
Alice Eve: JJ phoned me up and gave me a pre-amble for a good 20 minutes. I had to pull over. He asked me if I was committed and if I was interested in Star Trek and if I understood what the costumes were and the requirements were and I said ‘yes’ to all of it. But I didn’t still know if he wanted me to be a part of it, or if he wanted to tell me what he was going to go and do. So, I said: “I’m sorry, are you offering me this film?” And he said: “Yes, that’s what’s happening, yes.” I said: “Thanks very much.” And then I went home and saw my brother, who I had tired from making him run these lines with me, and went like that [gestures the ‘live long and prosper’ sign]. It was probably one of the cooler moments.

Q. What trait do you like about your character?
Alice Eve: I like Carol Marcus’s fierce intelligence, which she can be so distracted by that she will even change in public [laughs].
