STAR Wars: Episode VII has been given a US release date of December 18, 2015.

The announcement from Lucasfilm and Disney ends widespread speculation as to whether writer-director JJ Abrams’ could get the movie done in time for a 2015 release.

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement: “We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture.”

Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also recently announced that Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote 1980’s Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, has joined Abrams to re-work the script following the exit of writer Michael Arndt.

A cast has not yet been announced, although open auditions for major roles have been held in the UK this week.

Abrams is set to start shooting this spring at Pinewood Studios.
