PLOT details for Star Wars stand-alone movie Rogue One have been revealed.

The story will follow a group of rebels as they try to steal the Death Star plans, it was revealed at Sunday’s Star Wars Celebration in California.

The events will take place before Episode IV.

The official Star Wars account also tweeted on Sunday: “A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One.”

Star Wars fans at the Celebration event were further treated to a special teaser for the upcoming spin-off, which reportedly boasted a lot of war movie visuals, including scenes of a TIE fighter flying above a forest planet before revealing the Death Star.

Felicity Jones, who was previously confirmed to star in Rogue One, will play one of the rebel soldiers.

Gareth Edwards, the film’s director, was in attendance at the event, along with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm VP of development Kiri Hart.

He added: “It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have magic powers, that have to bring hope to the galaxy.”

Hart, meanwhile, said the stand-alone movies are being called ‘anthology films’ rather than spin-offs. They will also vary in scale and genre, with new characters and places.

The Rogue One details follow the revelation of a second teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that kicked off the Celebration weekend, and which has gone down a storm with fans of the franchise.

Star Wars: Rogue One is set to be released in December, while Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives on December 18, 2015.
