Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Story by Jack Foley

JJ ABRAMSStar Wars: The Force Awakens has been included among the American Film Institute’s list of the top 10 movies of the year.

Its inclusion marks the first appearance the new Star Wars movie has made on any year-end awards lists, since Disney did not screen the film for critics and other awards groups in advance of its December 14 world premiere.

But the AFI postponed its awards meeting from earlier in the month, so its jurors could have a chance to consider it before making their decision.

It now remains to be seen whether it can also find a way into Oscars contention when the shortlist for best films is announced early next year. Some box office pundits have predicted that it might having now seen the film.

The other film honourees for the 2015 AFI Awards include financial comedy-drama The Big Short, Steven Spielberg’s spy drama Bridge of Spies, Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance Carol, Pixar’s animated favourite Inside Out, George Miller’s post-apocalyptic chase movie Mad Max: Fury Road, Ridley Scott’s space epic The Martian, abduction drama Room, child abuse drama Spotlight and hip hop biopic Straight Outta Compton.

The AFI also revealed its shortlist for the 10 TV shows being honoured, which include new series Mr. Robot, Unreal and Aziz Ansari’s Master of None.
