STAR Wars: The Force Awakens is now officially the top grossing film of all-time in the US.

According to Disney, the JJ Abrams film has passed the $760.5m (£520m) taken by Avatar over its lifetime.

As yet, official figures for The Force Awakens have yet to be released.

But Disney did go on to thank its fans for helping the film clinch the domestic record, saying that without them “there is no Star Wars“.

“There has indeed been an awakening – and it’s all thanks to you,” Disney said, in a statement released on Wednesday.

Among its many other records, Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the fastest film to take $1bn (£674m) at the global box office last month.

But it has yet to unseat Avatar as the highest grossing film of all-time globally. James Cameron’s movie ended up taking $2.8bn (£1.9bn) across the world, compared to The Force Awakens‘ world-wide earnings of $1.6bn (£1.09bn) to date.

Nevertheless, hopes remain high that Avatar‘s record can be beaten.

The Force Awakens is already the fourth highest-grossing global movie of all time after just three weeks in release, and it has yet to open in China, where it does so on Saturday, January 9. If it breaks records in that country – the world’s second largest audience – it looks well placed to beat the record set by Avatar.
