Star Wars: The Force Awakens - key character names revealed

Story by Jack Foley

THE names of some of the key new characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens have been revealed.

US magazine Entertainment Weekly reports that John Boyega’s Stormtrooper is called Finn, Oscar Isaac’s X-wing pilot is called Poe Dameron and Daisy Ridley’s desert planet speeder-rider is Rey.

The as-yet unknown actor wielding the sword-like lightsaber that forms one of the highlights of the new teaser trailer is villain Kylo Ren.

Even the ball-droid shown rifling across the sand in the trailer has been given an R2-D2-like alphanumeric moniker – BB-8.

The names were revealed when studio Disney revealed a series of collectible playing cards to Entertainment Weekly, which resembled similar colour-coded cards that publicised the original trilogy of Star Wars films between 1977 and 1983.

Meanwhile, the teaser trailer for The Force Awakens is on course to become the most-viewed trailer of all time, having attracted an estimated 52 million views in its first four days after debuting on November 28.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is due for release in December 2015.
