STAR Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed the opening day record at the UK and Ireland box office, with a whopping £9.6m haul.

The figure is more than £3 million ahead of the previous record holder, James Bond’s Spectre, which scored £6.3m in October.

Incredibly, a quarter of the total figure, £2.4m, came from midnight screenings that took place from 12.01am on Thursday morning (December 17).

If the film continues to perform as well (which should not be a problem), it could become the highest grossing film of all time at the UK box office, thereby beating another James Bond record set by Skyfall a couple of years ago.

Globally, the film also seems poised to smash records, with some box office pundits predicting that it will surpass $650m over its opening weekend.

It remains on course to break Jurassic World’s $204.6m record for the biggest opening weekend in the US, while the UK and Ireland’s opening weekend record of £41.3m, also held by Spectre, looks certain to fall.
