Story by Jack Foley

STEPHEN Merchant is to star alongside Hugh Jackman in Wolverine 3.

The comedian and co-creator of The Office has signed up for an unspecified role in the superhero sequel, according to Deadline.

His casting comes just days after it was announced that Richard E Grant has also joined as a mad scientist-style villain.

Director James Mangold will return to direct Wolverine 3 following his work on The Wolverine, which garnered stronger reviews than the critically derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The film is rumoured to be Jackman’s last in the role of the iconic clawed superhero. But plot details so far remain under wraps. Shooting is due to commence in May with a view to having the film ready for a 2017 release.

Merchant is next to be seen in Table 19, a comedy set at a single’s table at a wedding, which co-stars Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow and June Squibb.

He has also been rumoured to be taking a supporting role in >I>Transformers 5.
