Steve Carell and Bryan Cranston in talks for next Richard Linklater film

STEVE Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne are in talks to star in Richard Linklater’s next movie.

Last Flag Flying is being described as a “sort of” sequel to the classic dramatic comedy The Last Detail, which followed two Navy men (played in the 1973 comedy by Jack Nicholson and Otis Young) who are ordered to bring a young offender (Randy Quaid) to prison but decide to show him one last good time along the way.

Last Flag, which was Darryl Ponicsan’s 2005 sequel to his own 1970 landmark novel, reunites the trio as they are now living a post-9/11 American life.

It once again finds the former Naval petty officers coming to the aid of their former prisoner, who needs their help to bring home the body of his son who was killed in Iraq. The request prompts them to retrace their journey from Norfolk, Virginia, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Linklater has long been keen to adapt Last Flag Flying and, at one time, had been hoping to reunite Nicholson and Quaid, with Morgan Freeman set to play the Young role.

But that incarnation never came to pass and now the writer-director is, according to The Hollywood Reporter, set to make the film with Amazon Studios having landed the rights.

If successful, the collaboration would mark Linklater’s first project with the streaming giant, which recently released Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon.

A November start date is being touted.

Carell recently starred in the Oscar-nominated The Big Short as well as Cafe Society. He will next be seen in the film Battle of the Sexes opposite Emma Stone.

Cranston has been working non-stop since wrapping up his acclaimed Breaking Bad television series. He recently starred in The Infiltrator and his upcoming films include the comedy Why Him? with James Franco, Franco’s directorial project The Masterpiece and the new Power Rangers film.

Fishburne was most recently seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but also has Passengers with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence and John Wick: Chapter Two coming up.
