Suicide Squad 2 to be written and directed by Gavin O’Connor

Suicide Squad

Story by Jack Foley

GAVIN O’Connor, the filmmaker behind Warrior and The Accountant, is to write and direct the sequel to Suicide Squad.

The follow-up is viewed as a top priority for Warner Bros. and looks to be one of the two DC properties to begin production next year, along with New Line’s Shazam!.

Zach Penn wrote a previous draft, which was originally to have been directed by David Ayer, the man responsible for the original.

But now that he has decided not to return, O’Connor has been selected to move the movie forward – and has now been set the task of penning a new draft of the script with a view to getting things rolling by autumn 2018.

The shortlist was also said to have included Jaume Collet-Serra and Mel Gibson – both of whom have opted for other projects.

Suicide Squad, which forms part of the extended DC Universe being constructed around the Justice League, grossed more then $745 million worldwide when it was released last year despite a critical drubbing.

Its ensemble cast included Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, all of whom are expected to return.
