Sunshine - Preview

Sunshine

Preview by Jack Foley

EDGE-of-the-seat thriller Sunshine looks set to become one of the great science fiction movies in contemporary cinema. It once again pairs director Danny Boyle with writer Alex Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald, who previously teamed up for the smash-hit 28 Days Later.

Set in the year 2057, when the Sun is dying and mankind faces extinction, the film follows the fortunes of the crew of Icarus II, a spacecraft crewed by eight men and women who represent the planet’s last hope.

Led by Captain Kaneda, their mission is to deliver a nuclear device designed to reignite our fading sun. But deep into their voyage, while out of radio contact with Earth, the crew hear a distress beacon from the Icarus I, which disappeared on the same mission seven years earlier.

A terrible accident throws their mission into jeopardy and soon the crew find themselves fighting not only for their lives and their sanity, but for the future of us all!

Sunshine’s cast is led by Rose Byrne (Troy), Cliff Curtis (Whale Rider), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Troy Garity (After the Sunset), Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, Batman Begins), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai), Benedict Wong (Dirty Pretty Things) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

The production team is led by director of photography Alwin Kuchler (Morvern Callar, Code 46), production designer Mark Tildesley (28 Days Later, Millions), and The Moving Picture Company, who created the spectacular visual effects under the guidance of Tom Wood.

The soundtrack is by John Murphy and Karl Hyde and Rick Smith of Underworld, who continue a collaboration with Boyle which began with the hugely influential soundtrack for Trainspotting.

Sunshine marks the third time Boyle and Macdonald have worked with writer Alex Garland. After adapting his hit novel The Beach in 2000, they teamed up with him in 2002 for the box office hit 28 Days Later.

We’ve been lucky enough to catch an early screening and we can tell you this film will blow you away. It’s visually stunning, intelligently scripted and features some cracking performances from just about every member of the cast.
