Superbad leads MTV Movie nominations (2008)

Superbad

Story by Jack Foley

SUPERBAD leads the nominations for this year’s MTV Movie Awards (2008), having been shortlisted in five categories.

The raunchy teenage comedy is in the running for best movie as well as best comedic performance for its star, Jonah Hill. It also got three best newcomer nods, for Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Michael Cera.

But it faces tough competition from the likes of crowd favourites Juno and Enchanted, which secured four and three nominations, respectively.

The winners, which are chosen by MTV viewers, will be announced at a star-studded ceremony on June 1 in Universal City, California.

In the best movie category, Superbad – which follows a day in the life of three high-school geeks as they attempt to secure booze for a party and get laid in the process – will compete against last year’s summer blockbusters Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End as well as Christmas hits National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I Am Legend.

Fun awards categories

The MTV Awards are designed to celebrate the more popular movies among cinema fans and have special ‘fun’ categories designed to highlight this.

Further categories include best villain, which finds Sweeney Todd star Johnny Depp competing against Beowulf‘s sultry Angelina Jolie, as well as Spider-Man 3‘s Topher Grace and Javier Bardem and Denzel Washington (for No Country For Old Men and American Gangster).

And best kiss, which includes Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer’s smooch in Disturbia, Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman in Step Up 2: The Streets, Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey in Enchanted and Ellen Page and Michael Cera for Juno. Oh, and a certain Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!

Enchanted star Adams scored a further two nominations – for best comedic performance and best female performance.

While Best Fight will be between Matt Damon and Joey Asah for their rooftop rumble in The Bourne Ultimatum; Tobey Maguire and James Franco for Spider-Man 3; Hayden Christensen and Jamie Bell in Jumper; Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan versus Sun Ming Ming in Rush Hour 3, and Alien vs. Predator for their grapple in AvP: Requiem.

A new category will also be unveiled this year: best summer movie so far. And the contenders are Iron Man, Sex and the City, Speed Racer, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Viewers can vote for the winners online until May 23.
