Taken 2 tops US box office as Ben Affleck's Argo lands second spot

LIAM Neeson’s Taken 2 has spent a second weekend at the top of the US box office despite competition from a couple of well performing new releases.

Neeson’s thriller landed a further $22.5 million in its second weekend bringing its US total to $86.8 million and further fuelling rumours that a third film is now likely.

Internationally, it also took a further $132.8 million to bring its world-wide total to $219.6 million – just shy of the $226.8 million earned by the first Taken in its entire run.

However, there were other notable weekend successes too. Ben Affleck’s Oscar-tipped Argo – which will be at the London Film Festival this week – opened with an impressive $20.1 million to easily take second spot.

Audiences flocked to see the period political thriller about the real-life rescue of six Americans during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis based on strong word of mouth and overwhelmingly positive reviews.

And Halloween horror Sinister also over-performed, taking third spot with $18.3 million. The film, which stars Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer whose family is plunged into danger after he finds a box of gruesome home movies at the house they’ve just moved into, is the most profitable of the weekend when taking into account it cost only $3 million to make.

Elsewhere, animated hit Hotel Transylvania continued to rake it in, leaping the $100 million mark in the US by grossing $17.3 million to land fourth spot at the box office. The film has now made $102.2 million in the US alone.

However, that film’s success came at the expense of new family comedy Here Comes The Boom, which only took a soft $12 million to slide into fifth.

The film, ironically, stars Kevin James (who has a lead voice in Hotel Transylvania) and is produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison company.

Overall, however, the mood in Hollywood was celebratory as the weekend box office was 58 per cent higher than the same time last year.
