The 50 films children should watch before they turn 11

Toy Story 3

Story by Jack Foley

DISNEY’S Toy Story, The Lion King and Frozen have been included on a new list of films that children should see before they turn 11.

Film industry experts picked the movies which they believe will most benefit a child’s development and creativity.

Compiled by the education charity Into Film, the list also allows for the nostalgia factor when choosing which films families want to watch together, which means there is also room for timeless classics such as Mary Poppins and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The Must See Movies Before You Grow Up campaign – run in conjunction with the UK video industry – is split into five categories: Classics, thrills and chills, heroes and villains, kids rule and adventure.

Among the oldest films is Disney’s 1941 animation Dumbo, while the list also includes films that were released last year, such as Trolls and The Secret Life of Pets.

Into Film’s chief executive Paul Reeve said he hoped that watching the films would help foster “a love of movies that can last a lifetime”.

He added: “Film entertains, educates and inspires. The Must See Movies list of the 50 films every child should see before they reach the age of 11 has been selected by our panel to do all of those things.”

Given the huge variety and number of films made for children, it is perhaps unsurprising to find that there are some glaring omissions… as well as some surprise inclusions.

Hence, while some may gasp at the likes of Nanny McPhee being on the list, especially given that Mary Poppins is already on there, they may also lament the absence of Pixar classics such as Inside Out, Wall-E and Finding Nemo (or its sequel). And there’s not even room for The Wizard of Oz or Bambi!
