THE Amazing Spider-Man has already created 4th of July fireworks at the US box office by breaking the record for the best ever Tuesday opening.

Marc Webb’s reboot, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, took an estimated $35 million on its opening day, comfortably beating the $27.9 million debut of Transformers on the same Tuesday in 2007.

The film has also received positive reviews and word of mouth from those who have seen it, meaning that distributor Sony Pictures look good going into the opening weekend.

The Hollywood Reporter quotes one Sony executive as saying: “We are off to an outstanding start here in North America with big fireworks still to come!”

Estimates currently put the film’s potential six-day earnings as somewhere between $120 million to $140 million. Tuesday’s opening figure included $7.5 million in midnight earnings from Monday.

It’s performance was buoyed by the decision to release in 3D (which commands higher ticket prices) and in IMAX, which also proved popular among viewers.

In addition to Andrew Garfield, the new-look Spider-Man stars Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Dennis Leary as her dad, Rhys Ifans as The Lizard and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben.
