The Bling Ring

SOFIA Coppola’s The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson, will open Un Certain Regard at the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

The announcement was made via Twitter ahead of Thursday morning’s press conference unveiling the full line-up for the annual event.

The Tweet ends speculation that the film would screen in competition.

The Bling Ring tells the true-life tale of celebrity-obsessed teens who broke into Hollywood homes between 2008 and 2009 in an effort to emulate their favourite stars.

In addition to Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang and Claire Julien complete the circle of thieves.

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg will serve as jury president of Un Certain Regard, which runs parallel to the main selections. The Prix Un Certain Regard will be awarded on May 25.

This year’s main jury will be presided over by Steven Spielberg, and the short film jury will be headed by Palme d’Or winner Jane Campion.
