The Butler and Scandal lead NAACP Image Award nominees

LEE Daniels’ The Butler and TV show Scandal lead the nominees for the 45th annual NAACP Image Awards.

Presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, the Image Awards recognize the best that communities of colour have to offer.

The Butler scored a total of six nods, including outstanding motion picture and outstanding actor in a motion picture for leading man Forest Whitaker.

Oprah Winfrey was shortlisted as outstanding supporting actress, while three of the male supporting cast were also nominated in that category, including British actor David Oyelowo as well as Cuba Gooding Jr and Terrence Howard.

Not far behind was Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, which is also in the running for outstanding film and has Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o among its acting nods.

Idris Elba was also nominated for playing Nelson Mandela in Nelson: Long Walk To Freedom.

In the TV categories, Scandal secured five nods, including outstanding drama and outstanding actress for Kerry Washington.

Boardwalk Empire was also shortlisted in three categories, including oustanding drama. It also saw recurring guest star Jeffrey Wright and series regular Michael Kenneth Williams recognised in the outstanding supporting actor category.

The NAACP Image Awards will begin being presented with a televised event on Saturday, February 22, 2014, with the winners of the non-televised categories announced on Friday, February 21.
