The Expendables 2 - Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren interview

The Expendables 2

Interview by Rob Carnevale

JASON Statham and Dolph Lundgren discuss some of the finer points of working with Sylvester Stallone on The Expendables 2 and what fans can expect from the sequel.

Jason also talks about keeping in physical shape and the discipline involved, while Dolph reminsces on the few decent lines he’s had to say in films. They were speaking at the UK press conference for the film.

Q. How has the bar been significantly raised with The Expendables 2?
Jason Statham: Well, it always has to be. Every sequel has to be bigger and better, otherwise the challenge isn’t there. But the expectation is that. So, you have to fill that requirement from the audience. But if anyone knows how to make action movies, it’s Sly. So, when he gets this crowd together you know you’re in safe hands. I think that’s very important because there are so many people who don’t know how to make action movies and sometimes you come up and get the… that situation is not always a good one, let’s put it that way [smiles]. So, when we’re in the company of the greats, we feel relaxed and we know that we’re going to do something good.

Q. What would you say about that, Dolph? Was it also a physical challenge as well?
Dolph Lundgren: It always is. It’s tough. We shot in Bulgaria for four months, enjoyed the tomato salads and cold chicken [smiles]. But the movie, like these other gentlemen mentioned, is bigger, badder, better and funnier. And that’s what we tried to do. I enjoyed that aspect of it in particular. Sly came up with these jokes, Arnold got the funniest lines, so we all tried to live up to the expectations.

Q. For action fans, the finest moment in any action film is the one-liner. There are so many great ones in this film but I wonder when you look back on your careers what you think the best and worst one-liners you’ve ever uttered are?
Dolph Lundgren: I’ve never had a good line [laughs]! Well, apart from “I must break you”. Sly told me to say that one and I didn’t argue with him at that point because I was a kid. So, he asked me to say it that way and I did.

Q. And Jason?
Jason Statham: Well, you’ve got to have a movie that people have seen and I don’t think I have [laughs] apart from this one! So, it’s irrelevant.

Q. Jason, you’re obviously in great shape for this film. So, what advice would you give people who want to get into a similar kind of shape? What would be your top tip for training and recovery?
Jason Statham: Um, I’m in amongst men who are a lot fitter and more in shape than myself, so down the list I’ll still answer the question because I have trained a bit. It’s still about having the focus and dedication and the restriction against eating the wrong foods. It’s a state of mind, really. If you can be good with your diet, that’s the first point. And then the rest comes easy… the exercise and commitment and having a good environment, that’ll take you to a certain level. But then if you’re looking to achieve great things like some of the Olympians, I can’t answer that as I never quite made it. But I’m sure Arnold can enlighten us on how to take it to an extreme level.
