The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Sam Claflin interview

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Interview by Rob Carnevale

SAM Claflin talks about playing Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and how he had to get into shape for the role. He was speaking at a UK press conference for the film…

Q. As one of the new guys, what was your experience of the first film? Were you already signed on for the franchise at that time? Or did you see it and think this was something you really wanted to be involved in?
Sam Claflin: I watched the first film as a stand-alone film. I had no idea it was based on a trilogy of novels and I remember getting the call to say that I had an audition for a film that was going under the pseudonym of The Idiom. So, I had no idea what that was about. But there was a character in the scenes I was sent called Katniss Everdeen, so that rang a bell. I then looked up Finnick Odair on Google and was overwhelmed by the amount of Wikipedia pages dedicated to him.

So, I did as much research as I could overnight and I worked out a much as I could overnight. But basically turned up the audition with an English accent, very pale, very out of shape, very unlike Finnick and did the best I could. So, I was a huge, huge fan of the first film. But genuinely I thought it was just a one-off. I thought they did a fantastic job of creating the world and establishing these characters and luckily enough I’m now involved in taking that further and deeper. I’m obviously privileged and honoured to be here, of course, with these guys. It’s fun. It’s good fun.

Q. Dd you have to do a lot of preparation to get into shape?
Sam Claflin: There was a huge amount of prep. I know that I’m not the only one who went through that sort of hellish journey. But for me, especially, I think I had to go through a huge physical transformation to try and be as Ken doll as I could. So, yeah there were many, many months in the gym and many months of eating nothing but chicken and asparagus.

Josh Hutcherson: I bet your pee smelled horrible for months on end!

Sam Claflin: I got used to the smell [laughs].
