The Jungle Book scores third highest UK opening of 2016

DISNEY’S The Jungle Book has secured the third highest opening of the year so far in the UK with an estimated $13.7 million.

Jon Favreau’s new adaptation of the famed Rudyard Kipling stories also amassed the highest grossing PG opening for IMAX in the UK.

The only films to beat it so far in 2016 are superhero titles Deadpool and Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Disney also scored a rare one-two as its animated title, Zootropolis held strong for a fourth successive week in second spot, adding $1.8 million to bring its total to $29.5 million.

In third was drone thriller Eye in the Sky, starring Helen Mirren and the late Alan Rickman in one of his final roles, which homed in on $1.6 million.

Batman Vs Superman fell a further spot in its third week with $1.4 million, bringing its UK total to $50.5 million – which sees it closing in on Deadpool‘s $53.6 million.

And rounding out the top five, Taron Egerton’s sporting biopic Eddie The Eagle slid to fifth with $1.1 million for an impressive total of $10.3 million.

The biggest fall of the weekend went to last week’s number one, Universal’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which added only $1 million to its initial haul of $4.2. It tumbled five places to sixth spot with a 10-day total of $6.3 million.
