The Night Manager's Susanne Bier on shortlist for next Bond movie

Story by Jack Foley

SUSANNE Bier is reportedly on a shortlist of names to direct the next James Bond film.

The Danish filmmaker is highly regarded throughout the industry but has had her profile raised considerably by the success of BBC spy drama The Night Manager, which also thrust its leading man, Tom Hiddleston, into contention to play the next 007 should Daniel Craig, as expected, step down from the role.

If chosen for Bond 25, Bier would succeed Sam Mendes, who, after the blockbusting successes of Skyfall and Spectre, has announced that he will not return for a third Bond film.

News of Bier’s presence on the shortlist was broken by Radio Times.

Aside from The Night Manager (which was based on the novel by John le Carré), Bier has also won widespread acclaim for her films include Things We Lost in The Fire, an addiction drama starring Benicio del Toro and Halle Berry, and Love is All You Need, a comedy-drama in which former Bond star Pierce Brosnan falls for a cancer patient while attending his son’s wedding in Italy.

As is usually the case with any Bond speculation, a spokesperson from Eon Productions, the company responsible for the 007 franchise, offered no comment on Bier’s potential appointment.
