The Perfect Guy tops US box office ahead of The Visit

The Perfect Guy

Story by Jack Foley

ROMANTIC thriller The Perfect Guy has narrowly beaten M. Night Shyamalan’s horror-thriller The Visit to the top of the US box office.

The film, which finds Sanaa Lathan playing a successful lobbyist who begins an affair with a charming but dangerous stranger (Michael Ealy) just as her former boyfriend (Morris Chestnut) returns, took an estimated $26.7 million.

The Visit, which marks Shyamalan’s latest foray into horror and first release since box office bomb After Earth, took an estimated $25.7 million. But while it appears to have narrowly missed out on top spot, it still marks the best opening of 2015 so far for a horror film and puts the director’s career back on track.

Once confirmed on Monday, the success of The Perfect Guy would mark the fifth weekend in a row that a movie featuring predominantly African-American actors in the leading roles has topped the box office, following the success of hip hop drama Straight Outta Compton.

The remainder of the US top five was occupied by Christian marital drama War Room, which fell from first to third place in its third weekend with $7.4 million, and Robert Redford and Nick Nolte’s A Walk in The Woods, which finished fourth with an estimated $5 million.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation completed the top five with an estimated $4.2 million, narrowly beating Straight Outta Compton and pushing its US total to $188 million.

Compton took in $4.1 million for a US total of $155.7 million. Overseas, it grossed another $4.3 million for a global total of $180.7 million
