The Possession tops US Labor Day box office weekend

The Possession

Story by Jack Foley

HORROR film The Possession has beaten gangster drama Lawless to the top of the US box office.

The Exorcist inspired chiller, produced by Sam Raimi and starring Kyra Sedgwick, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Natasha Calis, over-performed with an estimated $17.7 million, a figure that Lionsgate is estimating will rise to $21.3 million across the four-day Labor Day weekend.

If that is achieved, then The Possession will be one of the top Labor Day openers of all time.

John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era drama Lawless, starring Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke and Guy Pearce, and which opened on Wednesday (August 29) came second, grossing $9.8 million for the three-day weekend.

If projections prove accurate, the film will emerge the other side of the weekend with a solid six-day opening in the $14.5 million to $15 million range.

Aside from those two new releases, the remainder of the box office slots were mostly dominated by holdovers, with The Expendables 2 taking a further estimated $8.8 million to bring its US total to $66.2 million.
