The Purge sequel in development

The Purge

Story by Jack Foley

A SEQUEL to indie box office sensation The Purge is in development.

Producer Jason Blum and Universal have announced that they are fast-tracking a follow-up owing to the first film’s surprise weekend success, which saw it take a massive $34 million ahead of bigger budget Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn comedy The Internship.

A home-invasion horror thriller made for about $3 million, The Purge starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey and has proven to be a massive word of mouth hit, further benefiting from a clever marketing campaign.

But Blum believes the world in which the film is set – a society where once a year, there’s a 12-hour period when all crime is allowed and condoned – is ripe for further exploration and stories.

As yet, it is unclear who will direct or whether any of the original stars will return. There is no release date attached either.
