The Vow and Safe House top massive US box office weekend

The Vow

Story by Jack Foley

ROMANTIC drama The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, has topped the US box office with a massive $41.7 million to confirm the film’s Valentine pedigree.

But action thriller Safe House – starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds – also did strong business, easing into second spot with its own whopping $39.3 million.

Both films vastly over-performed to put the US box office figures for the weekend up more than 30 per cent over last year and continue the revival enjoyed since the start of the year.

The box office was further enhanced by the surprise success of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which shot past the 3D re-release of George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace to gross $27.6 million, also far more than expected.

The Star Wars re-issue opened largely in line with pre-weekend estimates, clocking up $23 million in business.

Two more holdover titles also did well in their second weekends to confirm the bumper time at the registers.

Chronicle and The Woman in Black took an estimated $12.3 million and $10.3 million, respectively.

The former has now amassed $40.2 million States-side, while Daniel Radcliffe’s horror has taken $35.5 million and enjoyed better second week returns than most horror films. It opened at the UK box office this weekend where it also shot to No.1.
