Tom Cruise's Oblivion tops UK box office

Oblivion

Story by Jack Foley

TOM Cruise’s Oblivion has topped the UK box office with $1.6 million despite lukewarm reviews.

The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, surpassed Cruise’s most recent film, Jack Reacher, by 34 per cent and opened on a par with the actor’s Mission Impossible films.

The UK was one of several international territories the film opened in prior to its US release on April 19.

Overall, it took $60.5 million from 52 territories and opened at number one in 48 of those, including Russia, where it took in $1.5 million, the biggest opening day of the year for a non-3D release.

Oblivion also ranked number one in Spain and France and also performed really well in Korea and Mexico.

The film therefore marks a success for the actor who, going into the weekend, had been looking for a sizeable hit to enhance his leading man status away from the Mission Impossible films.
