Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

Feature by Jack Foley

7) Name: Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

Starring: Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Tina Turner, Steve Bisley.

Why so great?: Mel Gibson was thrust onto the international stage after appearing in the first two Mad Max films – an Australian apocalyptic science-fiction film that chronicled societal breakdown, murder and revenge. George Miller’s low-budget original was a raw, unforgiving piece that featured a nearly monosylabic turn from Gibson but its successor, The Road Warrior quickly became a cult classic. Once again, the film featured some ferocious action sequences as well as plenty of oddball characters. The stark world that Miller once again created is difficult to forget. Gibson reprised his role for a final time in Beyond Thunderdome which, once again, featured some incredible stunts. But the presence of Tina Turner let things down slightly. Beyond Thunderdome is arguably the most mainstream of the adventures and suffered a little as a result.

Key scenes: Max catches up with Johnny The Boy (Mad Max); Max clashes with marauders; Max versus Humungus; Max takes on Pappagallo and kills Humungus (all The Road Warrior); Max in the Thunderdome; Max frees the Master and eventually sacrifices his freedom for the benefit of the children (Beyond Thuderdome).

Soundbite review: “An all-action movie that delivers all the violence and entertainment you could want!” – Channel 4 film on The Road Warrior
