Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Feature by Jack Foley

9) Name: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End

Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Mackenzie Crook, Geoffrey Rush, Chow Yun Fat.

Why so great?: The sequels may have drawn a mixed response from critics but audiences loved every lasting minute of the adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow. And whatever you may ultimately think of them, there’s simply no denying that Johnny Depp created one of the most memorable cinema characters of al time with his cavalier pirate. Inspired partly by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, Captain Jack was a joy to be around whenever he was on-screen and ensured that Gore Verbinski’s movies always remained fun and (to a certain extent) unpredictable. The jury remained out on Bloom and Knightley to the very end – but Nighy and Rush added plenty of class to their villainous supporting turns.

Key scenes: Captain Jack arrives; Will Turner versus Captain Jack; Captain Jack is stranded with Elizabeth Swann; Captain Jacks beats Barbossa (all Curse Of The Black Pearl); Captain Jack evades the cannibals; the Kraken strikes; Captain Jack swashbuckles in a giant wheel (all Dead Man’s Chest); Captain Jack is rescued; Captain Jack versus Davy Jones; Keith Richards cameos; Captain Jack bids farewell to Elizabeth (all At World’s End).

Soundbite review: “This is a superb swashbuckler – rousing, funny and spectacular!” – BBC Movies on Curse of the Black Pearl
