Slumdog Millionaire

Feature by Jack Foley

1) Slumdog Millionaire

Starring: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irfan Khan

Plot: Jamal Malik is an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Arrested on suspicion of cheating, he tells the police the incredible story of his life on the streets, and of the girl he loved and lost. But what is a kid with no interest in money doing on the show? And how is it he knows all the answers?

Why such a hot prospect? Danny Boyle’s rags to riches tale has already won the audience award at the Toronto Film Festival, and gone down a storm at the London Film Festival. Former Skins star Dev Patel has also landed a couple of breakthrough awards. The film is a feel-good sensation, based on Vikas Swarup’s best-selling novel, Q&A, and adapted for the screen by Full Monty scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy. It could well become an Oscar and Bafta contender.
