The Wrestler

Feature by Jack Foley

2) The Wrestler

Starring: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Plot: Back in the late ’80s, Randy “The Ram” Robinson was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, 20 years later, he performs for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life – trying to reconnect with his daughter, and strikes up a blossoming romance with an aging stripper. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring…

Why such a hot prospect? Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler is said to feature one of the performances of the year from comeback king, Mickey Rourke. It’s also a vivid, uncompromising film that’s guaranteed to leave you reeling following its emotional final scene. Yes, there’s a Rocky Balboa element to it… but Rourke is sensational and a safe bet for an Oscar nomination at the very least. If anything, see it for him.
