Top Gun sequel close to securing Tom Cruise return

Story by Jack Foley

THE long-muted sequel to Top Gun is close to luring original star Tom Cruise back.

After years of speculation surrounding the proposed follow-up to the 1986 smash hit fighter pilot movie, Top Gun 2 appears to have finally gained some serious momentum.

Justin Marks is currently writing the screenplay, while Cruise looks set to reprise his role as cocky fighter pilot Maverick.

Speaking at a Terminator Genisys junket in Berlin, Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed that the sequel is well and truly in development, with Cruise all but attached.

“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” he said.

Ellison also went on to confirm that the movie will focus on the issue of drones, adding: “He [screenwriter] Marks has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters. It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
