Toy Story 4 will be a rom-com

TOY Story 4 will be a rom-com with less of a focus on the relationship between toys and children.

The revelation was made by Pixar studio president Jim Morris during an interview with Spanish fan site Disney Latino.

Allaying fears that the fourth film had been greenlit solely to make Disney more money (as some angry fans had suggested following the announcement of the movie), Morris said that the new film would move the story of Woody and Buzz Lightyear forward without compromising the integrity of the original trilogy.

“It will be a love story,” he said. “It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children.”

“The third film ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. This movie isn’t part of the trilogy. It’s a separate story and I don’t know if will be continued.”

Disney chief John Lasseter, who directed Toy Story and Toy Story 2, is returning to direct the new film, which is due for release on June 16, 2017.

Toy Story 3 was released in 2010 and became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, before Frozen knocked it off the top spot last year.

The third instalment of the series also won two Oscars – for best animated feature and best original song.
