TRANSFORMERS: Age of Extinction has remained on top of the US box office for a second weekend with $53.8 million.

However, the July 4 weekend proved less robust than many had hoped with several new releases performing below expectations.

Melissa McCarthy’s new R-rated new comedy Tammy took $21.2 million and $32.9 million since debuting on Wednesday but fell some way below the $39 million debut of The Heat last year, or Identity Thief ($34.6 million).

And horror movie Deliver Us From Evil, featuring Eric Bana as a cop battling evil forces in New York, tied with 22 Jump Street for third spot with $9.5 million.

Earth To Echo, meanwhile, posted a lukewarm five-day total of $13.5 million and trailed How To Train Your Dragon 2 to place only sixth.
