Twilight dominates MTV Movie Awards 2009
Story by Jack Foley
TWILIGHT has dominated the MTV Movie Awards, winning five of the top prizes at the ceremony.
British heart-throb Robert Pattinson took three prizes, for Best Fight, Best Kiss and Best Breakthrough performance, while his co-star Kristen Stewart was named Best Female performance.
Twilight itself was named Best Film.
Commenting on his awards haul afterwards, the modest Pattinson thanked the film’s director Catherine Hardwicke for “casting me when I was an absolute nobody”.
Twilight fans were then treated to a world first sneak preview of the Twilight sequel New Moon, which is due to open in cinemas later this year, and which opened with a kiss between Stewart and Pattinson.
It goes on to feature a scene in which Pattinson’s vampire Edward apparently abandons Stewart’s Bella, leaving her to be attacked by another vampire. But she is saved by Taylor Lautner’s character, Jacob Black, who transforms into a werewolf to protect her.
Further MTV Movie Awards
Another popular teen movie, High School Musical 3, picked up two prizes for its stars. Zac Efron won Best Male Performance and Ashley Tisdale won Best Breakthrough Female Performance for her performances.
Late Australian actor Heath Ledger was named Best Villain for his role in The Dark Knight, Jim Carrey took Best Comedic Performance for Yes Man, and Ben Stiller picked up a achievement award for his movie career.
Amy Poehler won the award for Best WTF Moment for her role in Baby Mama and Miley Cyrus won Best Song for The Climb, taken from Hannah Montana: The Movie.
The MTV Movie Awards are voted for by members of the public and are traditionally as a more light-hearted alternative to the Oscars and Golden Globes, with blockbuster films more commonly recognised for their achievements.
The ceremony also allows room for indulgence from its participants and includes plenty of outlandish stunts and the odd glimpse of forthcoming blockbusters.
Aside from the New Moon trailer, there were also glimpses of the new Transformers movie, as well as Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince.
In one of the oddest moments of the night, however, Sacha Baron Cohen flew over the audience while scantily clad in his new character Bruno, before landing on top of rapper Eminem.
The singer then grew visibly angry and apparently stormed out of the show – with few who witnessed it being able to tell if the anger was real or rehearsed.
