Watchmen stars attend world premiere in London

Watchmen world premiere

Story by Jack Foley

THE stars of the hotly-anticipated blockbuster Watchmen attended the world premiere of the film in London’s Leicester Square on Monday night (February 23, 2009), just hours after Hollywood had been celebrating this year’s Oscars.

Watchmen cast members including Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley and Matthew Goode wowed fans, along with director Zack Snyder and his wife, Deborah, who also produced.

Earlier in the day, cast members spoke to the press about participating in the superhero movie, which is the latest to be based on the work of British author Alan Moore, and the illustrations of Dave Gibbons.

Wilson said that both Watchmen and last year’s Dark Knight had raised the bar for the genre and looked forward to seeing where future films went from here.

Snyder, meanwhile, outlined some of the lengths he had to go to ensure that Moore’s vision was realised, revealing that studios had originally planned to tinker with the graphic novels with a view to possibly setting up a franchise. The director, whose last film was the hit 300, insisted there was no room for a sequel to his movie.

Watchmen takes place in an alternative 1985, with the world perched on the brink of nuclear war. It follows a group of costumed crime fighters trying to solve the murder of one of their own and boasts the memorable tag-line: “Who watches the Watchmen?”

It is graphically violent, boasts male nudity and scenes of rape, and has been awarded an 18 certificate in the UK. It opens world-wide on Friday, March 6.
