Will Ferrell to get inaugural Comedy Genius trophy at MTV Movie Awards

WILL Ferrell is be honoured with the MTV Movie Awards’ inaugural Comedic Genius Award, it has been announced.

The award seeks to recognise an actor who has not only provided a major influence through their work but also transformed the genre of comedy.

Ferrell’s CV includes early work on Saturday Night Live through to beloved movies such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights and The Other Guys.

He also created the comedy website Funny or Die, leant his voice to animated movie Megamind and also enjoys taking risks, such as the Spanish language comedy Casa De Mi Padre.

MTV president Stephen Friedman said in a statement: “Will Ferrell epitomizes what it means to be a comedic genius, and it’s only fitting that he should be the inaugural recipient of this award.

“Over the course of his extraordinary, 17-plus-year career, he has entertained audiences across the globe with an impressive array of laugh-out-loud performances on air, online and in films. Simply put, Will Ferrell is kind of a big deal.”

Ferrell is currently completing the sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues, which is due to hit cinemas around Christmas.

The full list of MTV Movie Awards nominees will be revealed March 5.
