WILL Smith will line up alongside relative newcomer Mena Massoud and Power Rangers star Naomi Scott for Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin.

Massoud has secured the coveted role of Aladdin, while Scott will be playing Jasmine. Smith will take on the iconic role of the Genie.

The announcement came at Disney’s D23 on Saturday.

Aladdin is set to begin shooting in August in London, with Disney now on the hunt for the role of the villain Jafar. Sources suggest this will likely be played by a name actor.

Other roles yet to be filled include The Sultan and Jafar’s sidekick, Iago.

Aladdin will be the latest instalment in Disney’s long line of lucrative live-action adaptations of their classic animated films, which include the upcoming Mulan movie, from director Niki Caro, and Jon Favreau’s The Lion King.

Massoud – who was born in Egypt and raised in Canada – is part of the cast of Amazon’s Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski. He previously appeared in the TeenNick series Open Heart.

Smith is coming off the box office success of Suicide Squad and will next be seen alongside Joel Edgerton in Netflix’s fantasy-action thriller Bright.

Aladdin was the highest grossing film of the year in 1992 and won Academy Awards for best score and best song, for A Whole New World.

Ritchie’s take on the tale will also take the form of a musical.
