ONE of the screen’s grandest epics, Lawrence of Arabia is being re-released on November 23, 2012, with a 4k restoration to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
This monumental story recounts the true life experiences of T.E. Lawrence, better known to the world as Lawrence of Arabia.
A young, idealistic British officer in WWI, Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) is assigned to the camp of Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness), an Arab tribal chieftain and leader in a revolt against the Turks.
In a series of brilliant tactical manoeuvres, Lawrence leads 50 of Feisal’s men in a torturous three week crossing of the Nefud Desert to attack the strategic Turkish held port of Aqaba.
And following his successful raids against Turkish troops and trains, Lawrence’s triumphant leadership and unyielding courage gain him nearly god-like status among his Arab brothers.
Meticulously directed by David Lean at a then record studio cost of $13 million, Lawrence of Arabia earned seven Oscars® including Best Picture, Director and Actor, and has become one of the most revered movies of all time.
Peter O’Toole became an instant star in his first leading role as the dashing, slightly mad T.E. Lawrence, the British army officer who identifies with the people of Saudi Arabia and joins them in their fight against oppression.
Supporting O’Toole are such outstanding actors as Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Claude Rains, Arthur Kennedy, Jose Ferrer, Anthony Quayle and Jack Hawkins.
Sony Pictures senior vice-president for film restoration, Grover Crisp, supervised the restoration, ensuring that the film will be seen as it was meant to be, for the first time since its initial release. The film will be released digitally in both 4K and 2K format.
True to the original release, the film will be screened in its original roadshow format, with an overture, intermission, entr’acte and exit music.
