Woody Allen's Café Society to open 69th Cannes Film Festival

Cafe Society

Story by Jack Foley

WOODY Allen’s Cafe Society will open the 69th Cannes International Film Festival on May 11.

The film, starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, will play in an out-of- competition slot. The plot finds Eisenberg playing a young man who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry, only to find himself swept up in the vibrant cafe society that came to define the spirit of the age.

A star-studded ensemble also features Blake Lively, Parker Posey and Steve Carell.

Café Society marks Allen’s 14th time at Cannes, all out of competition. The most recent was Irrational Man in 2015.

Both leads, Eisenberg and Stewart, are also no strangers to Cannes. The former walked the red carpet last year as the co-star of Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs, while Cannes regular Stewart was last there in 2014 for Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria, a role that went on to earn her a Cesar, France’s highest cinema award. In doing so, she became the first-ever American actress to be so honoured.

The full line-up for this year’s Cannes is set to be announced on April 14.
