ZAC Efron is to produce and star in an adaptation of John Grisham novel The Associate.

The young actor will play a Yale Law School grad who is blackmailed by a group of criminals who tell him that he must take a job at the world’s largest law firm in order to spy on their work in a dispute between two powerful defence contractors worth billions.

The legal thriller was originally published in 2009 but has been proposed as a movie for some time. At one time, Shia LaBeouf was attached to star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a script writer is now being sought to adapt the novel before any further steps are taken.

Since making his name as part of Disney’s High School Musical phenomenon, Efron has been seeking to establish himself as a diverse character actor. On top of dramatic work in films like The Lucky One and Parkland, he has also branched into comedy with That Awkward Moment and the upcoming Seth Rogen comedy Bad Neighbours.
