Zack Snyder drops out of Justice League movie due to family tragedy

ZACK Snyder has stepped down from directing the new Justice League movie due to a family tragedy.

The filmmaker who helped to launch the DC Comics cinematic universe with Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice took the decision to remove himself from the project in order to deal with the sudden death of his daughter.

Snyder’s wife, Deborah, who is a producer on Justice League, is also taking a break to focus on the healing of their family.

Snyder’s daughter, Autumn Snyder, committed suicide in March at the age 20. Her death had been kept private, with only a small inner circle aware of what happened.

But as re-shoots prolonged the time Snyder would have to spend on the film, he was forced to arrive at his decision and go public with the news of his daughter to avoid any Internet speculation.

He told the Hollywood Reporter: “In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming.

“And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization… I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

“Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public,” he continued. “I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is … I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.”

Snyder’s decision has been backed by Warner Bros, the studio behind the move.

Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich commented: “What they are going through is unimaginable, and my heart — our hearts — go out to them.”

The decision to extend the shooting process of Justice League stems from a rough cut screening of the film, for fellow filmmakers and friends, at which Snyder decided he wanted to add additional scenes.

He brought on Joss Whedon to do so. But as he prepared to shoot the scenes in England, Snyder realised it was not the time to leave home. So, Whedon has now agreed to step behind the camera to complete the film.

Adds Emmerich: “The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set. We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing the baton to Joss, but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”
