ZOE Saldana is in talks to play the female lead in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress would play Gamora, a green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. She would also be a skilled assassin.

If the talks prove successful, Saldana would line up alongside the previously confirmed Chris Pratt, who is playing Star-Lord, and Dave Bautista, as Drax the Destroyer.

The role of Groot, a giant tree-man, and Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a passion for guns and explosives, have yet to be cast.

James Gunn is directing the space-set adventure movie, which is currently scheduled for a US release on August 1, 2014. Shooting is due to begin in June.

Saldana will next be seen reprising her role as Uhura in Star Trek Into Darkness and is due to return as blue-skinned alien Neytiri for James Cameron’s Avatar 2. She also recently completed filming on the crime drama Out Of The Furnace alongside Christian Bale.
