Zoe Saldana to play Nina Simone

Zoe Saldana in Star Trek

Story by Jack Foley

ZOE Saldana is to play Nina Simone in a new biopic.

The as-yet untitled film has been a long gestating project but appears now to have gained traction with Cynthia Mort having penned the script and attached as director.

David Oyelowo has also joined the cast as her manager, Clifton Henderson.

Given Simone’s incredible life, Hollywood has long been keen to make a biopic on her.

Simone rose as a singer-songwriter in the 1950s and became involved in the civil rights movement in the ’60s, even advocating violence.

Tax issues forced her to relocate to other countries, including France, where she passed away in 2003. Henderson was her assistant and manager later in life.

Saldana recently finishing shooting the thriller Out Of The Furnace alongside Christian Bale and Casey Affleck as well as the keenly anticipated sequel to Star Trek.

Oyelowo, meanwhile, will next be seen alongside Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher and is currently filming The Butler for Lee Daniels, another real-life story that follows the life and career of the longest serving butler in the White House.
