Adele tops BBC Music Awards for second year in a row (2016)
Story by Jack Foley
ADELE has dominated the BBC Music Awards for a second year in a row.
The singer picked up two of the main prizes on the night: song of the year, for Hello, and album of the year, for 25.
Although Adele could not attend the ceremony itself because she is currently in Los Angeles, she sent a recorded message stating: “It’s been a long year on the road and this makes me feel a little less homesick.”
Last year, the star won best British artist and best live performance.
Another of this year’s winners, and non-attendees, was Coldplay, who were crowned Best British artist.
In their recorded message, lead singer Chris Martin said: “Look at all those people – and we love you and we’re so grateful and we’ll see you so soon.”
Of the award winners that were present to collect their prizes, indie darlings The 1975 took home the prize for the best live performance on BBC Radio I this year for their string-drenched cover of One Direction’s That’s What Makes You Beautiful. They earlier launched this year’s ceremony with a performance of The Sound, from their number one album I Like It When You Sleep…
Further performances on the night came from Craig David, John Legend and Emeli Sande, as well as Swedish singer Zara Larsson.
Robbie Williams closed the show with a high-octane rendition of Sensational, after earlier accepting Adele’s best album prize on her behalf.
Izzy Bizu won the BBC Introducing Award.
Now in their third year, the BBC Music Awards aim to replicate the success of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, recognising achievement in music both in the UK and abroad.
