Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging OST - Review
Review by Jack Foley
THE best thing about the saccharine overload that is Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging is undoubtedly its soundtrack. True, there are two songs from new Sony BMG recruits The Stiff Dylans, including the risible Ultraviolet, but its mostly populated by some of the brightest indie-pop acts of the moment.
Director Gurinder Chadha (of Bend It Like Beckham/Bride & Prejudice fame) reportedly helped to co-assemble the tracks following a visit to Glastonbury in 2007, when she took note of the bands who captured the most attention.
Hence, the likes of Scouting For Girls, Lily Allen, The Coral and The Pigeon Detectives all contribute tracks. Admittedly, they’re well known songs already, lending this more of a Now That’s What I Call Music vibe – but if you haven’t yet bought a record by any of these bands, then this is a good starting point.
Of the best songs, Scouting For Girls contribute the still-endearing She’s So Lovely (used during the film’s opening sequence), while Peter, Bjorn and John find their way onto yet another soundtrack with their timeless gem, Young Folks (yep, the song with all the whistling).
The Maccabees, meanwhile, contribute the kooky beauty Toothpaste Kisses, which still charms when listened to properly, and indie stalwarts The Coral and Razorlight add two of their respective biggest hits in the form of In The Morning and Who Needs Love.
There are some interesting cover versions, too – although not entirely successful. The Stiff Dylans just about get away with The Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love With Someone by playing it straight, but Kooks fans may wince at Lily Allen’s take on Naive, which almost commits musical murder.
But, on the whole, this is a soundtrack that gets the mix just right, providing worthwhile appeal to young film fans who want to continue remembering the exploits of their favourite on-screen characters.
Download picks: Young Folks, She’s So Lovely, Toothpaste Kisses, Who Needs Love?, I Found Out, Great DJ
